Girls' Music Videos

Recently, there has been a phenomena of adolescent and teenage girls creating their own music videos.  One example of this above is titled "My Jeans" by 14-year-old Jenna Rose.  She became a semi viral-star when the video appeared on YouTube.  The focus of the song lyrics are on how she looks better wearing a pair of jeans than famous actresses her age like Hannah Montana (Miley Cryus), Ashley Tisdale, and KeKe Palmer.  The song provides an example of just one way girls' culture invites girls to imitate and look up to their favorite stars.  However, this is a little different than previous forms of adulation.  Jenna Rose brags that although these famous teens are wearing the same jeans, that she looks better than them in these jeans.  This shows a sense of confidence and empowerment that I have never seen before in music for girls of this age.  Hopefully, this video encourages other girls to feel beautiful like their same-aged movie stars, instead of solely focusing on the glamorous Hollywood image as an object of envy.  It does make me question though the apparent narcissism within the lyrics over her self-confidence that she is more "fab" than the stars.  Are we in a culture where narcissism prevails over traditional images of envy of the "rich, fabulous and famous"?
